Sergey Mkrtchayn was born on June 26, 2001 in Yerevan. At the age of 5 he started playing football, attending Banants (now Urartu) children and youth school. In 2019, the midfielder temporarily moved to the camp of the army club BKMA, playing in Armenian Premeir League, but in the summer of 2021 he returned to his native Urartu FC.

Sergey Mkrtchayn was invited to the Armenian national teams U-14, U-15, U-16, U-17, U-18, U-19, U-21.
